Rift (HD)


a remake of the Vertical Cinema film for the horisontal format, a microscope animation of plastic wrappings from consumables.

Premiered at Arctic Moving Image & Film Festival 2022


The intimacy of Strangers


A film that moves through microscope lichen landscapes, found on a rock in a fence at Trondenes in Harstad, Norway.

Vardø Kystopprøret


A series of three works based on 3d scans of the tools used by the coastal fishers, presented as HD animations, holographic animations and light boxes at various locations in Vardø in February 2022

Light Shaft


An installation made for my exhibition at Møre og Romsdal Kunstsenter.
A wave of light moving slowly back and forth, placed on the inside of the gallery pointing upwards through the windows of the light shaft.


Light Drawer 1


An installation made for my exhibition at Møre og Romsdal Kunstsenter in Molde.
Light moves across a circular floor leaving traces of the motion in the phosphorescent pigment on the surfaace.

Light installation created for Oslo Negativ in the former main public library in Oslo aka "Det gamle biblioteket", in one of the storage spaces for books that were not shown in the public shelves.


Touching at a distance


a series of prototype objects with the ambition to create intimate experiences over distance using tangible and sensuous objects.


Nye Krigere


A performance created in collaboration with Pål Bøyesen and Future daughter, with two characters loosely inspired by samurai warriors and Norwegian folklore.
It premiered at Rosendal Teater in Trondheim in March 2021


The Rise and Fall 2


I was invited to make a light installation for the Norwegian Fjord Centre in Geiranger for the first edition of the Geiranger festival of Light Art in march 2021.

a grid of 48 panels where each individual panel can be made either transparent or opaque,
where both the gallery space and the space outdoors become part of the work.

The Rise and Fall

a light installation with 4 rails of LEDstrip mounted vertically in the atrium of KODE1, Bergen.
It was a commission for the first edition of Bergen-Lights in January 2020.

A light sculpture created for the fountain in the small park Olaf Ryes Plass in Oslo.
It was part of the group exhibition signalfeil at Atelier Nord, january-march 2020


night shift

A light installation created for the office space of Atelier Nord on the 3rd floor of a building
on the south end of the park Olaf Ryes Plass in Oslo. It was a piece meant to be experienced from the outside after office hours.

watching from a distance

A light installation made for a cave with stalactite ceiling inside the fortress in Kongsvinger, Norway.

radiant live

An audiovisual performance using laser and phosphorescent pigment.

red white black

A rail of light follows the outline of the four interconnected rooms,
creating a space that expands, collapses, twists and turns in the light
from a red and a white pulse of light that chases along the walls,
corners and door openings of the space.
First shown at Akershus Kunstsenter February 2019

A large scale light painting in constant change using laser and phosphorescent paint.
First presented at Berlin Atonale in August 2018


entangled

Gilje has used the laser scanning technique LIDAR
to create a cast of himself in the forest
- a frozen moment orbited by a virtual camera.

A black and white form on a red background slowly changing shape and moving along the horizon.
Inspired by the work of painter and sculptor Gunnar Tollefsen.
Created for the group exhibition "Mitt Landskap" at Bodo Biennale 2016.


beacon

Kinetic ligt installation
Three light projectors suspended from the ceiling slowly scanning the space.
Each light projector consists of a light that orbits around a container of glass filled with water.
The water and glass works as a lens, focusing the light into a strip of light that moves around the space, like an inverted lighthouse.

Created for HC Giljes solo exhibition at Kristiansand Kunsthall aug-oct 2016.

Audiovisual performance in collaboration with Justin Bennett
Mikro is a series of improvised performances using the immediate surroundings as raw material.

Commissioned by and presented at Dark Ecology june 2016.


The Crossing

site-specific light-motion installation
Exploring and re-activating an abandoned construction site using light and motion: ephemeral light meets physical structures.
Pulses of light passing over an unfinished structure of concrete slabs sticking up from a frozen dam. A total of six lines of light were suspended over the 20x20m area in the industrial zone of Zapolyarny, Russia

Barents (mare incognitum)

a view of the Barents Sea slowly rotating: up becomes down, east becomes west.
Invisible borders and thresholds, and the potential for disaster inherent in the ocean.
Filmed at the border between Norway and Russia, pointing towards the North Pole, using my custom built orbital camera. Orbital is based on an idea of exploring spaces and landscapes using a video camera that slowly rotates around its own axis, and captures the world that revolves around it.

Presented during the Dark Ecology journey end of November 2015

Projection into the empty space of the gallery with a prepared elevated floor.
Dynamic light patterns are projected into the space, transformed by reflections and the shape of the space into an abstract light painting.
A steady pulse of sound is coming from various speakers placed in the gallery space.

Presented at Almost Cinema in 2011 and Kunstbanken Hamar 2015

The grids of the existing light fixtures in the gallery space are suspended about 1 m above the floor.
4x4 lines of light with synchronized light pulses passes over the grids, creating dynamic light-shadow patterns on the floor.

A series of white frames of equal size are suspended over a distance of 20 m, with a line of light passing above them.
Similarly two shorter sections of 10m intersect with the long line.
Light pulses pass over the frames, lighting up the frames but also casting slowly moving shadows on the ground.

site-specific kinetic installation

a mechanical repetative motion propagating the room through sound, light and shadow.
A circle of flip dots suspended from the ceiling creating a motion that travels around the circle.
A light from above creates a shadow of the moving flip dot structure on the floor.

Presented at Gallery Lynx as part of the Norwegian Sculpture Biennale 2015

Large wooden constructions resembling fish rack structures were placed on a beach on Sandhornoy, Norway for the SALT project.
I created a light-motion installation for one of the structures, meant to be a piece for the winter darkness.
12 lines of light intersect with the wooden structure creating a continuosly expanding and contracting structure.

Voice

audivisual performance
Maja Ratkje and HC Gilje has since 2012 collaborated on a series of performances where Gilje uses a series of bright LED matrix panels to create a dynamic horizon behind Ratkje«s vocal and electronic improvisations.
The screens functions both as displays and light source, bringing the whole venue alive.
Last performance so far at Smeltehytta, Kongsberg Jazzfestival 2015

light and wind passes through a volume of black strips suspended from the ceiling in the white gallery room of Wood Street Galleries, animating the space with light and shadows.
Ca 300 3m long strips of black plastic, 6 lines of light above the strips, 3 fans.

24 lights placed in a circle that rotate around the circle animating the shadow of whoever/whatever is below the circle.
This version was placed inside a custom-built half-transparent space at Wood Street Galleries so the installation could be experienced both inside and outside the space.

3 circles of light revolving, creating a mulitcoloured band of light and shadows moving around the walls of the space.
A custom half-transparent space was constructed so the light patterns could also be experienced outside the installation space.

The frame of a square is placed at a 45 degree angle on and underlying square platform.
The frame is resting on the platform with one corner.
The projection constantly changes the relationship between the frame, its shadow and the background.

Circle explore through projection, light and reflection the inside,
outside and perimeter of a circle mounted at a 90 degree angle to the floor.

Two waveforms, one side blue-white, the other side red-white, with a total length of about 400m.
The movement of the train through the tunnel animates the waves.

Commissioned for the Fantoft tunnel for the new city-metro Bybanen in Bergen 2010.
