OBSERVATORIET

The installations in OBSERVATORIET make use of six different rooms across five floors in the tower at Spriten Kunsthall in Norway.
The works are site-specific, but also site-fictional in the sense that I take the concrete structures of each room as a starting point without considering their original function, and instead attempt to create a kind of fictional universe with elements from archaeoastronomy, sci-fi, ecology, and rituals.

I have been inspired by the close connection between architecture and astronomy throughout millennia in different cultures: structures that integrated the movements of celestial bodies into their design — a blend of observatory and temple where the rhythm of the cosmos was woven into spiritual life and everyday life.

In a darkened tower, movements of light function as a tool to activate, transform, focus, open, and close spaces. The works exist in an interplay between the building’s spaces, the movement through them, and the visitor.
